Patrick Ronald & Shannon McDonell, Isidro Blasco, Stefan Mauck: ‘facades’ August 25 – October 2, 2007
In this stunning internationally cast exhibition four artists deal with the subject of facades. Each artist investigates this theme in a distinct style, their works have been brought together to give a fresh perspective on the built environment.
Blasco (born in Spain, lives in New York City) uses digital photography and common building materials to assemble three-dimensional constructions that reconstruct interior spaces and outdoor environments culled from the artist’s personal New York cityscape. His three-dimensional sculptures result in an elliptical succession of multiple angles, producing a space that is at once recognizable and entirely new. Blasco is held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art and many other international museums.
Mauck’s (born in Germany, lives in Rome) central theme is the investigation of three-dimensional areas of items and their dissolution into two-dimensional areas. One of the most important focal points is his debate on architecture. His approach is to use texts, reliefs and wooden frameworks.
Sydneysiders Ronald & McDonell investigate visual perception. They use a highly methodological technique that borrows procedures from aerial photography and photogrammetry. Each facade is shown in isolation from it’s true surrounding environment to archive an unobstructed clinical representation. The result emulates an ‘accurate’ perspective which in reality is virtually constructed.
